The Holmes Report on what's hot in consumer marketing, featuring Shine's Richard Brett

Earlier this week The Holmes Report published its look at the hot trends in consumer marketing. It's a really good read, not least because Shine's very own Richard Brett, our brilliant MD, is quoted about the importance of content in its broadest sense in reaching and engaging consumers.

Shine's 2012 grad scheme is now open for applications! Get stuck in...

Shine is on the hunt for the restlessly brilliant stars of the future. And to kick things off, here’s a word from Kate McGregor, Account Manager, Shine grad in 2008 and the recently crowned 2011 PRCA Young Communicator of the Year (pictured above):

“As I enter my fourth year as a fully-fledged Shiner, I am just as excited about coming to work as I was when I first walked through the doors on my grad assessment day. Throughout the last three and a half years Shine has taught me a multitude of lessons, both professionally and personally. The grad scheme at Shine gave me the best possible grounding, learning by getting stuck in rather than being an outsider, all the while working with some of the most creative and inspirational people in the industry.”

Enough of Kate, let’s talk about you.

If you’ve graduated by summer 2012 and are looking to kick-start a career in PR then you should consider applying for our graduate programme.

We take it you’ve looked around our site and got the feel of our agency.  If you can see yourself being part of the Shine team, then read on.

We’re offering three paid graduate placements to start in summer 2012 for three months.  The lucky candidates will be working as part of a dedicated team on a number of Shine’s clients and will be mentored by some of the best PR professionals in the business.

Key timings:

  • Entry closing date: 9th March 2012
  • Phone interviews for successful applicants: 19th March 2012
  • A final shortlist of applicants will be invited to Shine for the next stage on 19th April 2012
  • Graduate placements will start from June 2012

Please note, YOU MUST HAVE GRADUATED BY THIS SUMMER! Please don’t apply if you will be going back to university after the summer holiday.

To be in with a chance of being one of our 2012 grads please send your CV and a covering letter for the attention of Louise Breslin to: grads@shinecom.com

Within your covering letter we would like you to tell us about your skills:

  • Why would you be suited to a job in PR?
  • Which recent PR story really caught your attention?
  • Any dates you aren’t available to work and the reason why

We would like to get to know you a little better, so please tell us (in no more than 200 words for each point):

Three interesting facts about yourself

  • What it is that drew you to apply to Shine?
  • What your favourite book, album, film or product is – and what you would do to launch it to the media/target audience
  • And anything else you think best shows off your creativity - it could be a photo, video, poem, piece of writing or a presentation, it’s really up to you

The closing date for entries is the 9th March 2012.  If you are successful in the first stage of application you will be contacted for a short phone interview*. If you impress us you will be invited to come and show us what you’re all about here at Shine. If you’re one of the three chosen ones you will be invited to complete a three month paid placement, with the possibility of more if you really shine…

* Please note if you haven’t received a phone call by 23rd March your application has therefore not been successful. Sorry.

Good Luck!

If you would like to come and experience working at Shine we also offer work experience placements throughout the year.  If you are interested please send your CV along with a covering letter and the dates you’re available to marie.morgan@shinecom.com

The eBay Christmas Boutique is finally open!

Gadget Show host and tech fan Suzi Perry declared the shopping emporium officially open at 9am last Thursday, by cutting the red ribbon with Miriam Lahage, eBay's Global Head of Fashion, and Angus McCarey, eBay's European Head of Retail.

We had 535 consumers in on the launch day alone – around 250 of whom were in before lunch time - and many hundreds more over the weekend. A total of 50 press from 25 media outlets attended our opening day activity – including 10 photographers and 6 camera crews at the photo-call.

By the afternoon, the eBay Christmas Boutique was on the BBC News and the launch has been aired on national radio stations including Magic, Heart, Absolute and LBC. The next day it made headlines in national print and graced the screen on ITV’s Lorraine Show.

There’s a definite buzz about the Boutique in London, with 5 online news stories and 210 tweets on Twitter reaching nearly 500,000 people.

Today's the last day that the Boutique will be open so you better hurry if you want to catch it. Come on down to 34 Dean Street, Soho, London and say hello. See you there.

Shine 'Steps' out and breaks a world record for Kung Fu Panda 2

There were oodles of noodles in Chinatown last week as we headed to Chinatown to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of bowls of noodles.

To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of Kung Fu Panda 2, we joined forces with staff from Leong’s Legends - who certainly lived up to their name - having prepared the noodles the night before and brilliantly assisted the following morning in setting up the line. Despite the chilly conditions, the crowds had begun to gather as the line extended the length of Gerrard Street, and, after 2 hours, the line was complete. Following a meticulous inspection from an official at Guinness, we nervously awaited the verdict…and to our delight, it was announced that we had broken the world record! A massive 1,288 bowls stretching 367ft!

As if breaking a world record wasn’t enough, over at the Sainsbury’s Hayes store the Paramount team welcomed the biggest names in pop to host an exclusive karaoke launch event. Claire Richards and Lee Latchford-Evans from recently reformed uber-pop group Steps joined a host of fans and Sainsbury’s staff to sing some of their biggest hits. Customers witnessed anything but a ‘tragedy’ as the duo treated everyone to a storming rendition of Kung Fu Fighting from the DVD. A signing session followed ensuring that Pandamonium was buzzing down aisles ‘5,6,7 and 8’!

Shine's fashion and beauty teams out in full force with Forever 21 and ghd

Bit of a busy day for Shine's fashion and beauty team yesterday as we arranged not one but two big press events for clients Forever 21 and ghd.

Last night the Forever 21 team held the US fashion brand’s second ever UK press preview.

90 UK fashion press including the like of Harper’s, Grazia Daily, The Guardian, InStyle, LOOK and more headed down to 24 on Kingly Street, London where four key spring/ summer trends were showcased. The trends were brought to life within individually styled booths which press eagerly explored, snapping shots of the mannequins and pulling out their favourite pieces from the rails.

Across the board media were impressed with the looks on show, maintaining the excitement generated when we launched the brand onto Oxford Street and in to Westfield Stratford earlier this year.

A mere stone's throw away across Soho (well, with a particularly good chuck) the ghd team welcomed over twenty beauty and features writers as we hosted an immersive theatre event at 68 Dean Street.

Taking inspiration from the latest Snow White 1920s themed advertising, the event was a big shift for ghd. As soon as guests entered the building they became involved in the plot of the missing Snow White, with each media meeting various characters from the twisted fairytale (the evil queen, the King, the ever so camp mirror). After a 1920s hair make over and a three course meal the mystery behind Snow White’s disappearance was finally revealed.

Shine wins PR Week Award for Best Broadcast activity

Shine's remarkable award-winning run in 2011 continued last night as we picked up yet another gong, this time at the PR Week Awards. In scene's uncannily like those pictured above, we hopped onto the stage to grab the award in the Best Broadcast category for our work on the WWE  World Tour. ere's the lovely Kate and Richard receiving the award from the dark lord of spin himself.

We've sort of lost count, but by our reckoning that's six (or seven) award wins from about 20 nominations so far this year. Hot.

Children's charity Plan appoints Shine for its first ever brand campaign

Shine has been appointed by Plan, the children's charity that works with communities in 50 developing countries to alleviate child poverty and promote child rights, to lead a new brand building strategy for the organisation in the UK.

Shine1, our planning and strategy unit will initially lead the development of Plan’s first integrated brand campaign, through a multi-stage research and development process, including in depth consumer quantitative and qualitative research, ensuring that the campaign is built on comprehensive insight.

Shine’s proprietary statistical research suite, ShineStat, will also be employed to understand the optimum channel and media mix, and will be used to develop the campaign’s business plan; tying and connecting marketing spend to predicted fund-raising.

Upon completion of the plan, Shine will then deliver the integrated programme across multiple channels including advertising, experiential, public relations and social media.

Leigh Daynes, Plan’s Director of Advocacy, Campaigns & Communications, who oversees the brief, commented: “Embarking on an integrated brand building campaign to raise both awareness and support is an exciting first for Plan. It signals a step-change in our marketing communications, and reflects our ambitions to become a household name that promotes children’s rights and fights poverty across the world”.

Shine launches its new proprietary planning system

We’ve announced our new Shine1 proprietary planning system.

Our new planning system consists of twelve individual tools and analysis techniques that together ensure we will continue to be at the forefront of strategy. The tools bring to life robust, high quality thinking and make sure that the very freshest, insightful and commercial ideas come to the fore. This, together with Shine’s new measurement system Eric, will tie campaigns back to business benefits.

Shine1 Planning Stage Model - A seven step journey through planning – from developing consumer insight, drafting a positioning, writing a communications platform, story angle and messaging, communications channels to agreeing final measurement tools.

The Shine1 Power Grid - Takes a brand and a limitless number of competitors through a research based journey to establish the key challenges across five key metrics  – awareness, differentiation, connectivity, relevance and admiration – to ensure a campaign is resolutely focused on the communication need.

The Shine1 Strategy Map - Pushes an articulation of strategy, objectives, platform and messages on one page, and connects it back to audience insight.

The Shine1 Touchpoint Model - Helps establish which channel is the best for a campaign, given the objectives, business and commercial need.

The Shine1 Media Map - A media strategy development tool that articulates messages, spokespeople, channels and media all in one place. This is underpinned by Pulse, Metrica’s media planning tool, which Shine1 uses as a development device.
